the woods stagger // david mclean
the trees who stagger
under this cancerous sky
have freely chosen their trapped
stasis, it is not now they cast flaming
growth as naked leaves to stultifying heaven
to burn in the sun's kitchen, summer that loves nothing except its
suicide tonight, black heavy
night and a sky that burdens life
like a morality, mortality and the moral
obligation that lies in the dying,
the trees are naked tonight
and sentenced to life
